On Performance

Beyond crafting a utopian narrative for London’s queer community, the project possesses another dimension. One that transcends fiction and connects to the present by using performance as an agent of change. Performance is employed as means to reclaim Queer space in the city, in a vigilant, unapologetic way. The props produced to facilitate such events are derived directly from the narrative, becoming 1:1 storytellers, whilst being physical manifestations of queer architectural practice.

Performances, combining the ‘happening’ of the situationists with the extravagance of a drag show are to be orchestrated in strategic parts of the urban realm, raising awareness on the impact of unregulated development and gentrification upon London’s LGBTQ+ scene. First such performance was made during a symposium at Central Saint Martins. It was directed by the author’s drag alter ego, Divine the III, with contributions from other drag performers. You can read and download a review of the performance here.
